Is taste important when it comes to protein powders? You better believe it is! Further down this page, we shared exactly what shoppers told us.  And there’s also an offer to try the product. But before we talk about that, let’s go back to 2009 when PlantFusion was just launching. There were far bigger brands in the market selling plant protein powders at that time. This was 15 years before “clear” vegan protein powders had been discovered.  Back in those days, the rice and pea protein powders were not the best quality. They were dry and chalky and companies would just mix them together and add stevia. Most of those early shakes tasted like the bottom side of a lawnmower………yuck! But that’s what was available, so people used it. 

When we created our original PlantFusion Complete Protein, we realized there had to be a better way. We sourced higher quality protein ingredients from Europe which didn’t have the bitter offnotes that were present in the pea and rice proteins coming out of China.  We also consulted with some of the most talented food technology people we could find who introduced high quality natural flavors. The same flavors being used in organic gourmet foods. And rather than loading up the stevia, we experimented with blends of monk fruit, lucuma fruit, yacon root, and other natural sweeteners that were unheard of in those days. The result was the best-tasting high quality vegan protein powder on the market. In the process, we learned one VERY important lesson………..the experience people have when they use your product day after day is everything! It turned out that the TASTE of the product, one small but important characteristic, helped us break through and establish our niche, which ultimately started the legacy of PlantFusion that goes on today.

Fast forward to 2025, we stumbled upon our next big innovation in plant proteins. A natural enzymatic process that would break pea protein down into shorter chains of amino acids known as peptides. Originally, we were fascinated by these peptides because of the unique functional benefits they offered over regular proteins. Namely, they would absorb into your system faster and deliver a powerful dose of amino acids to the muscles quickly. But there’s a side-effect of this process that may be even more important. Because the proteins are broken down into smaller fragments, they are much smaller and lighter and thus dissolve more completely in liquid. So much that they are nearly clear when mixed. So instead of a thick, heavy, milkshake experience, it feels more like a light refreshing protein juice.  It’s almost like a protein shake and a light refreshing sports drink had a baby together. I know……….that’s very weird! But, if you’re like most of us, you’ve consumed thousands of protein shakes over the years and would love to have something different. For many, this amazingly light and refreshing new protein is a very welcome change!

My New Go To Protein

This is perhaps the first protein I’ve used that doesn’t seem heavy or dessert like. It tasted bright and light like a flavored water of sorts but still filling. I love that it’s not chalky, it’s not creamy at all. To me, that makes a tremendous difference because I get tired of the regular shakes very quickly.

Tasty and Perfect for Summer

I’ve tried quite a few protein powders over the years… and some honestly feel like a chore to drink 😅
